Ubiquitous Self-Portrait

This balloon deviates from a traditional self-portrait because it conveys multiple facets of the artist which form the overall composition. The various focal points of this piece each contain a different portrayal of the individual, from her outer physical exterior to her inner thoughts, as well as the inside of her body. Ashkenazi intends this piece to explore the depths of its materiality and convey expression without cohesion.

Ticket to Heaven/Passport to Hell

The front piece titled “Ticket to Heaven” is juxtaposed with the more chaotic back that reads “Passport to Hell”. This combination of words was inspired by a souvenir that she came across in Chinatown D.C., however its message holds a deeper meaning about the choices we make in life and the motivations behind them.  The artist hopes this piece ignites inner reflection, discomfort, or any other feelings whether positive or negative.

What is on the Other Side?

In this piece, Ashkenazi’s use of one point perspective draws the viewer in as they are suddenly surrounded by sculptural figures reminiscent of the renaissance movement that contrast with the vibrancy and colors which are reflected through the medium. The central focal point lacks a subject and is intended to further immerse its audience. Filling the sky is an abstract cloud referencing the, “Shroud of Turin,” which hangs above a hectic landscape where the future is unclear.
