The central focal point lacks a subject and is intended to further immerse its audience. Filling the sky is an abstract cloud referencing the, “Shroud of Turin,” which hangs above a hectic landscape where the future is unclear. She briefly studied sculpture at the Savannah College of Art and Design, but eventually realized her techniques were more aligned with fibers. With a background in both fields, she tries to incorporate these two loves into her work to find a place where they meet in the center. Inspired by her passion for classical and contemporary art, Ashkenazi wishes to create floating “paintings” using mylar from foil balloons. Each is hand-sewn together with thread, transcending the original purpose of the medium. Her work is done on a larger scale since its intended location requires the audience to look up high towards the ceiling, given the nature of its balloon-like structure.
